Have you ever posted here using a public WiFi?
#1
We have been getting quite a few overlaps in IP addresses from prospective new members and current members. I was just wondering if you have ever posted to this group from a public WiFi like in a library, mall, etc.

There is no reason not to post from anywhere you like, but we'd kind of like to know if this is a problem for us checking out new members.

Interesting. Wouldn't that mean the individuals who are posting from the public wifi are also posting from the same area? I know sites such as this one can't be opened in the public library where I live. I wouldn't imagine you should be getting a large number from the same area?

Not really, I am mostly writing posts from home (like 99% of the time). Mostly Reading stuff on phone when I am not home and I try to use a VPN client when I use public wifi to be safe when going online.

But I also had to use the mobile internet conncetion with my cellphone in the past even though being at home, using the tethering option of the phone, in cases my internet provider is having troubles and cable internet is down once again. Dodgy

People living in the same household (for example parent / child) will get the same IP as well when loggin in from home of course.

Wouldn't it be possible that people using the same VPN service provider could also be a cause for several people getting overlapping IPs? Like when using the same VPN server of the same provider?

Just a thought, but would that maybe an explanation? Though it would be quite the coincidence with the relatively few members here using the same VPN Service provider and the same server.

That is a very good point.

Same area yes. Interesting comment, but years ago I used to login to this site a lot from University library computers with no problem, I think busses blocked it by accident at some point however.

At Katrina says, the most logical reason is people are using VPNs or proxies which give a the IP of the VPN not the IP of the user in question.
The other thing is, at least here in UK, IP addresses are assigned dynamically by ISP (unless you pay extra for a static which for personal use is ultra rare). In theory, your IP you used could be reused for another person.

my bro has downloaded express vpn on all our comps im not allowed to search without it.....*shrugs* it automatically starts when my comp starts ...I didn't really know what it was until ppl started saying VPNs and I noticed it was EXPRESS VPN lol... I think that changes my IP? idk I don't really pay attention to that... I'm more worried about when I go on here or like to my bank account or other private stuff or like even when searching at school when I was at school...like FB or insta....could they seee what I was doing online??? so I hope when I turn off the wifi and don't use any public wifi they can't track where I'm going.... whenever I search anything I don't want ppl to see or know about aka Joe esp LOL I sound like a bad kid.. I'm not but I deserve privacy... I turn the wifi off....... i can then just use my phones data....idk what means for tracking me tho? did I even help answer this question.....idk........but I'd sorta DIE if anyone irl knew I was on this forum.

Most of the computers in our house sign on automatically with a vpn because my stepfather counsels people from home....and that does change your ip so people can't determine your location....which is none of their business to begin with. Confused
Do you ever clear you history so your brothers can't see what you've been searching...not that I would ever do that? Wink
