I think the interesting part is that the response was in favour of spanking. I can't imagine a public response like that today. Of course, I can't imagine a teen writing to a newspaper with the same complaint today either.

I thought the response was very well balanced in terms of both saying that a spanking was clearly warranted, but also reminding the father to be careful about humiliation at the girl's age. And I agree with Nancy that such a response would never be published in the newspaper now.

I do find in interesting that he didn't choose to introduce spanking until she was fifteen - not that I have a problem with that.

In fact quite similar to our household, though again I cannot believe Isobel would be inclined to write such a letter on the subject! To tell the truth I am not sure I would have had the courage to at that age, which was rather nearer the time this letter was written. A very interesting snapshot Garth.
