Channel News Asia on Caning and Spanking - Anymouse - 10-22-2020

This article isn't really news to us, but it does discuss spanking from an Asian and Singaporean perspective which I think makes it more worthwhile.
Why Few Parents Openly Admit they Cane, Smack, or Spank

Quote: parents can use mild to moderate corporal punishment effectively, a study conducted in response to Professor Gershoff’s led by University of Berkeley, California’s Professor Diana Baumrind, known for her work on parenting styles, argued.

This is echoed by Dr Kim Lian Rolles-Abraham, a senior clinical psychologist in Singapore who finds it more useful and reasonable to remind parents that harsher physical punishments like caning should never be conducted in an emotionally charged environment

It must be where you live? We don't talk about spanking in everyday ordinary conversation but my church supports spanking and maybe it's a military thing but I also figure most of my friends were spanked too. The difference is I think most of them stopped being spanked before being teens.

It is very regional. In some places, a parent that spanks is a freak. In some places, a parent that grounds is a joke. But I have always found it very interesting that parents from different parts of the world who don't share a language or a culture are all taking an object and spanking their kids' bare butts with it. I think it is human nature, to an extent.

I don't know if it is true but my dad says mostly all the kids in my school get spankings since it is something that my Christian school believes is how God says to discipline your kids. I don't know if he is right but today in bible study we learned about Christian correction and how we are supposed to do that and accept it and to how first time obedience is what God expects of us.

Dad is just nuts. Seriously nuts. How many counselors are there that support spanking? It's sooooooo.....not forward thinking.

Forward thinking isn't always correct! Racism and Eugenics used to be cutting edge in some places. Automobiles arguably ruined American transportation.
Not all changes are good changes. And spanking isn't necessarily that backwards. Singapore is one of the leading Neoliberal nations in the world, and they are clearly fond of the cane.

I agree that some change is bad. In fact, I hate most change. I don't like it that Dunkin Donuts changed their name to Dunkin. I don't like updates on my tablet. I didn't like Windows updates when I had a computer. I like for everything to stay the same. My motto is "If it's not broke, don't fix it".

My husband has a lot of traditional views but that doesn't mean he isn't forward thinking. He deals with a lot of children who have behavioral problems and will tell you it's due to a lack of discipline (not punishment) in the home. I've heard him complain to himself many times that parents are the ones who need to be spanked. He isn't allowed to suggest to parents that a good spanking might set a child on the correct path or hit a reset button and that frustrates him. He is very much a child advocate but societal bias binds his hands.
