Putting pictures of this online seems really unnecessary to me. I'm not convinced it's a good idea at all, but maybe as a last resort it could make a little sense. But spreading pictures all over the world just seems like unnecessary humiliation. It's obviously a really sad situation and it should stay a private family matter.

This is what parents have to resort to when the media and society tells them that spanking is abusive. A good sound spanking should do that job for a 10 year old boy, but when the mother is afraid to do so because CPS or the cops being called on her, she has no other resort really. I do think the pics posted online were overboard, but her actions of enlisting the help of the police were not. Perhaps the police could have explained to the boy and the mother that her giving him a good spanking is completely legal and could go a long way in curbing misbehavior.

In Canada many parents are confused about spanking even though it has been deemed legal by the Canadian Supreme Court. Some of this confusion comes from the police but primarily from C.P.S..

I had junior high boys who would brag and go on and on about how cool it makes you to get arrested. This mother may have been hearing some of the same talk from her son if he is hanging out with the wrong crowd. Now he knows it is not so cool and he is not as big and bad as he thinks himself to be.

I think many parents are not so concerned with what is technically legal, they are afraid of what is called abusive. Most people parent their children as they see fit but if they are convinced that something they are doing is abusive, they will begin to question themselves. Certain groups, via the media, have convinced many parents that the tried and true disciplinary methods employed by their parents are abusive.

Our member Ambroise on here is one example. Spanking is illegal in France, but his parents do as they see fit regardless of the law. As do parents in Canada. You cannot convince me that the law about using an implement or spanking a child over the age of 12 has stopped all parents from using a wooden spoon or spanking a defiant 13 year old.

Actually I'm fairly sure that spanking is not illegal in France. A legal ban has been discussed but - for the moment - rejected. It is one of the few countries in Europe which has not banned spanking, and in fact surveys show that about 70-80% of children are still spanked. Allez les Bleus.

The idea of calling police - even as a kind of spoof or mock arrest - is absolutely bizarre. A ten year old will be traumatised far more seriously by an episode like that than by a few minutes tipped across his Mum's knee....

my mistake about france Smile there are others countries though where it is illegal and I am sure parents are undeterred by the law when it comes to parenting their children as they see fit.

in fact, there has been a few pro-spanking articles in the UK press, pointing out that the French are still very comfortable with spanking their children, and that this might perhaps be why their children are so much better behaved!
