It is perfectly clear that in this case "spanking" had gone beyond reasonable limits, if the girl's bottom was bruised.
That does not make the anti-spanking law any more sensible. Assault occasioning actual bodily harm would have been a reasonable charge (as it would had she been given a black eye). Nor is it to say she shouldn't have been corrected for her foolishness in sending a nude picture. That was an error, but learning from mistakes is what adolescence is about.

I agree the spanking was excessive. In Canada the father would be guilty on three counts. Spanking a child over the age of twelve, using an instrument to spank with and leaving bruises. Of course ignorance of the law is no excuse but many Canadian parents are not aware of our laws concerning corporal punishment.
