I can't say that I'm surprised, especially considering the recent elections.

The Huffpost report doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Just what was outlawed, and what is now to be permitted is not at all clear (but perhaps would be if I had had the historical background).

What is clear to me is that "spanking" is so hard to define that any attempt to regulate it by law is doomed to failure, and the law itself is brought into disrepute. We had a similar problem over the blasphemy law in UK, and the result was that only a handful of prosecutions were ever brought: and all, I think, overturned on appeal.

When Jusrin Trudeau was a child living with his father, than the Prime Minister of Canada, and his two brothers in Ottawa, their nanny was asked the question by a reporter if she spanked the Trudeau children. She refused to answer the question but it would not surprise me given the time that they were spanked on occasion. Right now the government has several important issues to deal with in the near future such as assisted suicide, Isis and the economy. I doubt they will put much priority on this one as they will have to change the criminal code as it now stands which may be both expensive and a fairly long judicial process involving the Supreme Court. If it does come to a vote in Parliament I think the Liberal Party will allow a free vote which means the Bill would unlikely pass to ban spanking as the MP's would vote according to their constituents wishes. I guess will just have to wait and see what eventually happens. It could be awhile before the issue is resoved.
