Spanking, Prayer and Meditation.
#1
When a child is about to get a spanking I am pretty sure the last thing they are probably thinking about is prayer and meditation. They are anxious and fearful and for many children the anticipation of even getting a spanking can be as bad as the actual experience itself. Paradoxically however religions teach us our suffering is not all for nothing and by learning to embrace it we can realize Devinne joy and inner peace. Consequently I did believe in a period of self refection or contemplation before a spanking and I knew some parents who actually prayed with their children before or after the spanking took place. God is right there with all his compassion and love when your child is about to go over your lap. It only takes a few seconds to realize this and if you take the lead your child can not but help to connect with His spiritual presence. Whether it be prayer, meditation, contemplation taking the time to realize God will change a uncomfortable or painful situation into one of joy and celebration!

I have read or heard of parents and caregivers that pray with their children before a spanking is administered. I haven't done it myself, although I think it could be a good idea to do so, since I am trying to raise my boys in my faith.

I think that such a practice should be sincere yet brief. A long prayer would probably add anxiety to the child as they anticipate the spanking itself. Confused

I know that Dave has reported in his posts that he prays with Cody and Brady before spanking them. I'm not sure if any other members here do so as well? Perhaps someone would be willing to post a reply with a "sample prayer" that they may say with their child before a spanking?

I do pray with both Brady and Cody before a spanking. How we actually do that depends a lot on the situation at the time. Sometimes I will pray for the two of us and other times I will do a "repeat after me" prayer. In both cases, I always ask the boys if there is anything they would like to pray about at the end of the prayer. Some prayers are longer than others. I try to keep the ones with Brady short and to the point because he is scared and often upset at that point. Cody is nervous too but he has a strong spiritual sense and I think that praying is calming for him.

The prayers always focus on most of the following elements: forgiveness and reconciliation, gratitude for His word and guidance, gratitude for His unconditional love for us and our intrinsic value, prayers for strength, courage, and wisdom, and finally a prayer for guidance for the future. Some of those get combined into one brief statement or phrase.

I don't follow a script. Each time is different and from the heart and based on the circumstances. When I have more time I'll post a sample of a prayer I might lead.

We often have prayers before and after a spanking. I pray that my spanking will be guided by wisdom and that the spanking will guide (Sam,Kevin or Cate) into the paths of righteousness;I also pray that (name) will understand that the warmth of his/her spanked bottom shows the warmth of my love and through that the warmth of God's love. I also add other prayers depending on the circumstances and the child's attitude.
I would be interested to know what prayers other parents offer.
Our children are encouraged to pray too but do not have to.

Our 13 yo daughter Cate has offered different prayers: one of them is "thank you for giving me a daddy who loves me enough to take the trouble to give me spankings". I thought that was a lovely prayer!

I administered a paddling on Saturday and we prayed beforehand.
It was a wonderful moment.

For my wife and I, prayer before a spanking helps us integrate the Bible into our discipline routines and start the healing process for our kids to learn the lesson that's needed and move on. Generally, our kids have a simple prayer they say, and my wife and I will add our thoughts to the prayer as needed. The big themes are acceptance, repentance, learning, and understanding what the Bible has commanded of us as parents. The prayer after is all about forgiveness and moving on.

Thank you Henry and David for picking up this this important and interesting topic.
I am so glad the praying before the paddling was a wonderful moment Henry. You must have created a lovely spirit for the event beforehand.
I rather liked Martin’s equation of the warmth of the spanked bottom to the warmth of the parent’s and God’s love!
I also thought his daughter’s prayer was lovely too. Our 14 yo Terry has never included that in a prayer but she has sometimes said something like that me. It makes me feel very good.

Mark, Thank you.

I've had very positive feedback from the boys about a pre paddling prayer.

Firstly by kneeling with them, I am showing my own vulnerability, fallibility and humility.

Secondly it is a calming moment, focussed on the correction being a response to behaviour and not 'me hurting them'.

Thidly, it emphasises that physical correction is something WE (myself AND the boys) DO, rather than something I do to them. If anything, it is the most important outcome: making it clear that a successful correction needs two participants....the one administering and the one receiving. Although we are all a bit reluctant in that they don't want to receive discomfort and I don't enjoy applying it, we recognise through this process of prayer that we each have a role to play.

I try to administer the correction lovingly, biblically and wisely, while their part is to cooperate and absorb the pain, and we hope, put it to good use.

Henry
