As of tomorrow France will no longer allow spanking. There are only four European countries that allow it now including Switzerland, Italy, UK and Czechoslovakia. This does no surprise me though I feel it may have been more appropriate not to outright ban it but perhaps have certain restrictions placed on it like Canada has done. I doubt the UK or any Commonwealth country will ever completely ban spanking in my life time and it may never ever be banned in such countries as USA. I think spanking does have its place when it comes to discipline and banning it all together seems to me like "throwing out the baby with the bath water!"

I'd imagine a great number of parents in France will do as parents do in other countries which have infringed on their parental rights - ignore it and do what they know is best for their children and families.

I am with your opinion. Child abuse must be fodbidden, but to ban spanking is a wrong idea

Bad parents are not the type to obey laws.
This will only give good parents the difficult choice of spank and break the law ( not being found out still means law has been broken ) or struggle with alternatives.

The French on the whole treat law a great deal more freely than we "Anglo-Saxons". For example, "European Directive" in England means something to be obeyed, "directive" in English having a certain coercive force. In France, "directive" means something more like "advice" or "guidance" and European Directives which don't seem suitable are likely to be quietly ignored.
I suspect the same will happen over spanking. I don't expect to see the martinet disappear from the quincaillerie any time soon.

Bonjour Garth.
Je vais bien, et toi?
Edit: I think, that was my whole French vocabulary. I only learned English, Latin and Spanish at school.
