Thumbs Down Parental spanking in the UK
The following recently appeared in the UK press.

A father who allegedly smacked his five-year-old son on the bottom for breaking a plant pot has been charged with assault.

The 25-year-old dad claimed he had smacked the child as a reasonable chastisement – but has now appeared in court on charges of assault causing actual bodily harm.

Prosecutor Christine Hart said that bruising had appeared on the young boy after the alleged assault on May 23.

Here if you leave a bruise you get charged no matter the instrument. Whether it would be common assault or assault causing bodily harm would probably depend on the extent of the injuries and the "weapon" used.

That appears to be the case the father I believe claims that the smacks delivered did not cause his sons bruising. The majority of school age kids have multiple bruising at any time from falls and scrapes it certainly doesn’t mean they are victims of abuse.

The child probably learned a valuable lesson in behaviour from being smacked. Sadly if found guilty dad will probably at the very least removed from the family home and denied access to his child which in my opinion is totally ridiculous

I agree with Garth, But I guess (note Guess) how this came about the marks were seen at school, perhaps when the boy was changing for gym class or had trouble sitting down, Last year over here a I think it was a step dad who spanked a six year old girl that hard she had difficulty sitting down at school.

The stepdad was jailed for six months

Some children bruise easily. There is a blood test they can do to determine that. You can usually tell by the location of the bruises whether or not they could possibly be accidental. I take it at this point in time CPS has either removed the child from the home or the father has left the home and has only supervised visits. The criminal proceedings are totally autonomous from the family court proceedings initiated by CPS. The most likely outcome will be the father will be placed on probation for at least a year and will have to take counselling. You could expect this to take in Canada 6 to 12 months in the courts before any resolution. Longer if it goes to trial.

Meanwhile, we are dealing with Las Vegas! Where have our priorities gone! Perhaps some light bruising could help prevent such atrocities!

Sorry, getting off my soapbox now!

There may be more to the Las Vegas shooting than what we're being told.

I can't believe that any of you would even attempt to defend the father if the news reports are correct. This is a five-year-old we are talking about who has bruises from a spanking. There is nothing reasonable about that, and the father is abusive for leaving them. I have said before that I don't think that light bruises are always a sign of abuse, but in those situations, we were talking about on teenagers, not on a small child.

It’s yet to be proven that the bruises were associated with the boy being spanked, we are supposed to have this lay in the UK that an acused individual is innocent until proven guilty so why is this dad being denied access to his children. Your hearts in the right place James but I don’t believe social services should be splitting up families for a bruise on a child’s bum
