Dear Abby

In 1962, liberal advice columnist Dear Abby said that husbands should not spank their wives. She said that spankings are for children. I agree with her. But can you imagine the reaction she would get now if she said that spankings are for children? It would be negative, to say the least.

There are few people that advocate spanking children. However it is still hugely popular throughout the world though I have found few parents want to admit to it or even talk about it. Of course spanking your wife would be domestic abuse and something I doubt occurs in today’s society.

Although that is a complicated thing too. There are some very strictly patriarchal people out there. And there are foreign places such as rural Vietnam too, although that is kind of out of the scope of Dear Abby.

There do seem to be a few continued advocates of spanking, but they are largely in the realm of Christian parenting materials from my impression. Indeed, this is not something Dear Abby would support today.

I never have condoned husbands spanking their wives. I believe that husbands and wives should be equal.

Dear Abby made a lot more sense in 1962. The liberals of that era were a lot like the conservatives of today.

Garth, you may not be aware of it but there are quite a few married couples today, mostly Christian couples, who practice domestic discipline based on the Biblical principle of the husband being the HOH (head of the household).

Yes, I have been in touch with a few people who support that.

Personally I do not know anyone that does practice domestic discipline but I am sure it exits. As long as it is consensual I have no problem with it.

I agree that if it is consensual, then it is their business. Non-consensual marital spanking might be common in some parts of the Middle East, but I'm not sure.

I agree as well. Rural Vietnam too, from what I have heard. (We are a bit off topic from the forum in this discussion, of course, which I am partially responsible for...)

Speaking of advice, one area that I think could really be good would be the possibility of a low cost ebook on spanking (print could also be good), which I have discussed in the past; something well written and accessible to parents. Particularly, discussion of the discipline of teenagers is weaker in most books on this subject available today from what I have seen, and this should probably be addressed to fill that gap.
