Ahh, apparently just in Scotland at this point...that is unfortunately, something that seems to be in the vein of the ideas going around there.

That is very unfortunate. But it's not surprising.

I wonder if there is anything those in Northern Ireland can do about their Children's Commissioners...they do not seem to be the kind of people who would go along with something like this.

Tommy is right, there are no surprises that this is happening, only the UK and Czech Republic allow spanking in the EU now, it will be gone once the current Government is gone (they are too preoccupied), As for Northern Ireland, there is no Government at present, so not much will happen there until the politicians decide to work together.

I believe its only a matter of time before there is a total ban on parent / child spanking in the UK. I don’t believe it will end spanking but simply criminalise a perfectly reasonable child rearing tool.

The only thing that happens is that parents ignore the ban. Like here, they just go underground. Nothing ever happens unless one of the kids complains, but if they understand from a very young age that if they do they risk breaking up the family they come to realize that the law makes no sense.

The problem is the government is overstepping its boundaries. How a parent raises their child should be the parent's decision because they know their child far better than the government ever could. Only if actual abuse takes place should the government be allowed to interfere. I think most of us on the forum can define the difference between spanking and abuse.

The Government should stay out of the child raising business. I agree that unless there is abuse involved, then the government should really have no say in how a child is raised.

I think 99.9% of people on both sides of the political ailse would agree with this statement, and acting (most on here, not just you), like that isn't the case, actually hurts the ability to make our argument.

The disagreement is on what constitutes abuse.

The issue isn't government meddling, its government, popular culture, and far to high a % of people, thinking of spanking as abusive. That's where we need an articulate, effective, and persistent push back
