All this law does is turn good parents into criminals going over mum or dads knee is nothing to do with child abuse

I agree with Ellie. According to the law here I'm a criminal. I don't feel the least bit guilty ignoring a misguided law.

In Canada it is legal to spank from the age of two to twelve. After that you could be charged with assault but usually if you are caught, which is quite rare, you would just get a warning unless of course you injured the child or left marks; then you would be charged with assault no matter the age.

Nancy I’m glad you don’t feel guilty because your not and I’m sure Amy is a better young woman for your guidance. In England here I’m leagally a consenting adult staying at home with my parents, its a bit like ticking the conditions box when you download a computer app. You agree to abide by the rules or there are going to be consequences. I think its a very odd situation only to be allowed to spank children up until age 12 as it appears to be in Canada. I’m young enough to remember the spankings I got ages 11 to 15 when the puberty fairy had waved her magic wand. Had mum not taken me in hand I have no idea where we might have ended up. Happy Christmas

I almost posted a topic about this, but I wasn't sure it would interest people here.

To give you an idea, when the law was passed, there was a poll from the newspaper Le Figaro. When I voted, there were over 30,000 votes and the percentage was smothing like 18% in favour of the no-spanking law and 82% against. One of the reader comments I read on the newspaper's website said something like 'This is why the Yellow Vests are protesting, the people governing in Paris don't care what the population thinks (I'm paraphrasing)'. The law was passed, but it will be largely symbolic.

Up until a few years ago, a no-spanking law in France would have been out of the question (a member of the Assemblée nationale had put a motion in 2009 and it fell through), but there was a lot of pressure from the other European countries. Also, there was a case in 2016 in Limoges (IIRC) where a father was fined 500 Euros for spanking his 9-year-old son. He was seperated and the boy's mother complained that he went over her wishes.

... Because that's what the French governement does, for just about everything? Which explains why ordinary people have been taking the streets for the last couple of Saturdays?

Emmanuel Macron has proven to be a very unpopular leader.

When the Nanny of Pierre Trudeau, father of Justin Trudeau (current Prime Minister of Canada) , Nanny was asked if she spanked the Trudeau children, she blushed and refused to answer the question. French Canadians are known to spank their children and so far no political party has supported an outright ban on it that I am aware of. I doubt very much the current law will change anytime in the near future no matter the political party in power.
