Pouring a bucket of water on him would have gotten him up out of the bed.

Sometimes there are more to things like this than meets the eye. We have had an experience like this in my extended family (one of my nephews). He suddenly stopped wanting to go to school. He had pre-existing problems but it all came to a head when he was 14 and just became a refusenik in the morning. Without going into details, he was out of school for nearly two years, he got back in but the damage caused by disruption and severe anxiety is still with him although he has managed to regain an almost normal life since.

A cold water bucket.... or a hairbrush. Would get him out of bed in notime.

Before I'd consider a punishment, I'd want to know why he didn't want to go to school. He could be a victim of bullying or feel frustrated because he is having a problem learning.

Excellent advice Nancy. It is important to know why kids are acting the way they are.

Children usually refuse to go to school for two reasons. The first is because they are delinquent and just don’t want to go. The second is because they are phobic. In both cases the family and child may need counselling. There is also the possibility the child is being bullied at school and are fearful of being hurt or picked on by someone. As a parent I would check this out first and speak to their teacher or the principal to make sure this is not occurring.

I agree with Nancy and Garth, in cases like this finding out what is reason behind it is the most important thing. If there is a underlying issue punishment won't help.

Yes, this can be a significant issue. School life can be quite hard sometimes.
