Humility

Jesus said “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.“ What does this mean when it comes to child rearing? To be meek I think you have to suppress the ego. Children initially have no ego but as they grow older it can start to dominate their personalities. It is an essential part of human development. It is what separates us from the animals. When I speak to parents, especially those that have more then one child, the number one reason for discipline often is because the children fight. This was true in my own family between me and my brother. As your children get older their egos strengthen and become more predominant, they have to be right and make others wrong. Their egos and self esteem will not tolerate anything else. As a result they get in trouble. They often challenge authority and the rules in spite of the consequences. So how do we squash this monster and help our children become meek and humble? Spanking certainly does this I think. It did for me. Having your child prepare to be spanked and having to go over your knee or some other object is certainly a humbling experience. It does not have to be humiliating however if you follow Jesus’ advise and example. Just be calm, loving and gentle and your child will be “meek and inherit the earth”. He or she will be like Jesus. The ego will start to desolve. They will be who they really are and know God’s grace.

Yet again wise words Mr Garth, you clearly understand the difference between humble and humiliation. I consider my self a humble girl but not meek. Being respectful and indeed obedient to those in authority is simple good manners. I can be quite confident and spirited when I get upset and that can get me in trouble.

For a self-conscious teen to bare their bottom, bend over and keep still while taking a painful correction is necessarily humbling. But for me, the punishment should be the stinging bottom, and the benefit is the opportunity to reflect and to feel that the matter is over.

I try very hard not to make it humiliating; this would be a further punishment in its own right. Garth is absolutely correct.

In fact, many teens find grounding to be more humiliating because their friends get to know that they are being punished. And while grounding offers much more reflection time, there is far less 'release, relief and peace' for the recipient when it is over.

The rest of the family will be more relieved though because the tension will drop and they will no longer be punished by proxy.

As a practicing Catholic, I know that people often misinterpret and misuse the Bible for their own ends. I think that this piece of scripture is one of the most misinterpreted sayings.

The meek are employed by the ones that are not so meek. The meek are followers not leaders. I believe this quote means that we should accept our lives and be meek in our relationship with God not with each other. I think it means that we should accept legitimate authority and a child with a parent is certainly in that relationship.
