RE: Statistics
Interesting about half of 13-14yo still subject to spanking. Many join here thinking that they are the only ones!

Some googling turns up 1995 for it.

RE: Statistics
I wonder how many of those were real spankings and how many were just slaps to the bum.
Although if it's 1995 real spankings were more common I guess.

RE: Statistics
My guess is the survey took place several years ago.

RE: Statistics
I would definitely agree that the survey seems outdated. The one about what percentage of preschoolers getting spanked at 61% might still be about right today, but the question abotu 13-14 year old being 50% doesn't seem right. If I had to make a guess, I would estimate closer to 1 in 3 to 1 in 4. One nonmember I talk to daily got his last spanking at 16 and was threatened to get a spanked once shortly after he turned 18.

RE: Statistics
What country or region? In the 1996 PBAS study (Parents' Based Attitude About Spanking), it was much more sommon in the southesat of the US and the Midwest than elsewhere. Conservative religious beliefs were also a clear indicator of positive attitudes towards spanking.

RE: Statistics
Those stats sound about right to me, or not super high, even for today. Especially the 50% of 13/14 year olds. We forget how regional things are, and that skews us. In large parts of the US south and midwest, I'd wager its 80% plus. In large parts of new england and california I'd wager it's 10% minus (though even then, far more common than 10% in, say, hispanic communities).

I think that what happens is people from the communities where it's common are less likely to need a forum like this because they don't feel "odd". And people from other communities come here because they DO feel the odd man out. But that skews the perspective a lot.

RE: Statistics
My Own Research:

About 90 per cent of the parents I talk to on Trillian are from south eastern United State. These are usually mothers with large families (four to ten kids) and occasionally single fathers that have primary custody of their children. Spanking usually starts after age two and lasts well into late adolescence (seventeen or eighteen). Both parents spank and both parents were spanked growing up. Fathers usually spank harder then mothers according to the kids. Boys seem to get spanked more then girls and they both get spanked the most around ages seven to twelve. It is not unusual for a nine year old boy to be spanked once or twice a week or at least one of the children to be spanked during the day in a large family. Spankings usually start out with the hand but often an instrument is introduced by age five to seven. Usually this is a wooden spoon or hairbrush and sometimes the belt when the kids get older. Parents usually don’t count the number of spanks and many decide on the length of the spanking by the child’s age. For example half their age in minutes. Parents often use a timer or iPhone to make sure they don’t spank too long. The parents also deny ever leaving any lasting marks. Spankings are always bare, usually in the privacy of the child’s bedroom. Warning spankings may also be given; that is a couple of smacks over the child’s clothing. Time outs are often used before a spanking or as a warning. The children usually cooperate when spanked. Usually two warnings are given before a spanking. The number one reason children get spanked in large families is for physically fighting with each other. Older adolescents are frequently spanked for missing their curfews. Usually only relatives are allowed to spank their children and sometimes nannies or babysitters. It is not unusual that the older siblings are allowed to spank the younger siblings when they are babysitting. Most of the parents say they are raising their kids the same way their parents raised them though some say they are less harsh with their physical discipline then their parents were. The parents report their children do well at school, play sports and the girls go to dance classes or cheer leading. Usually their kids are quite competitive. They have pretty well all reached their milestones when expected and are usually in good health. Their kids rarely get in trouble at school or show any behavioural problems. Also the parents I talked to are usually well off and the fathers educated beyond high school. The mothers rarely work. They usually live in the country, have a swimming pool and like camping. They are close to their extended family, have regular family get togethers and they too believe in spanking. They often look after each other’s children. About half homeschool and very few attend Church regularly. None of the mothers or fathers I talked to appear to have any mental health problems though some of the fathers I talked to whose wives had left them say the younger children regressed initially after the parents separation. The single fathers who have primary custody of their children often feel their x-wives are mentally unstable.
