News Paper Article From 1977

The article can be found on the Corporal Punishment Research site under school punishment or even simpler, google "Texas student spanked at school by mom" and it comes up. It takes place in Mesquite Texas in 1977. A 15 -year-old girl is due to get swats at school for being late three times, if I recall correctly. Her parents are against their daughter, Tamara being paddled by a male, so they pulled her out of school. Making a longer story shorter, an agreement was reached allowing Tamara's mother to come to school and discipline Tamara in the principal's office. Her mother came to school with a belt used for Tamara's home discipline. Behind closed doors Tamara got 3 with the belt which is what the school would have done with the paddle. A witness to the spanking was quoted saying "Tammy would have been much better off taking the 3 swats from us, her mother really sizzled her behind with that strap".

Sounds like home discipline is in place to deliver a good message about behavior. Why they would decline school paddlings is a little weird. I never opposed to the school paddling. Sounds like the Mom took care of business though.

Given gender dynamics, particularly in 1977, if my daughter had already been spanked by a man with a male witness, and I told them never again, and they STILL told me that there couldn't be a woman present, I absolutely would not let the school paddle my child.

There's no reasonable reason you can't have a female witness or a female paddler. And if the school tells you there is such a reason, absolutely tell them they can't lay a hand on your child. When something smells fishy, it usually is. And a school insisting you can't have a woman present smells VERY fishy.

From what I understand about the article, Tammy's parents were not opposed to her being paddled at school, they just did not want a male doing it. The article also tells us that Tammy had been paddled previously for being tardy and it was done by a male and her parents were quite upset and didn't want it happening again.

Back then schools would have been more comfortable allowing teachers to paddle, I would assume. But today given the Admin Only expectations every single paddler would be male at the schools I know, except for one elementary school with a woman principal.

Most schools large enough to have a VP or two make sure at least one is a woman. And also some schools designate one teacher or department head as the paddler for the girls. Or, you can just have a female secretary serve as witness. It isn't that hard

Yeah, I think not wanting your daughter to bend over and be paddled by a man is pretty reasonable, or at least to have a female in the room.

I don't think there's anything wrong with school paddling, but it doesn't need to be done that way.

I agree with Melissa Jean. A school paddling should be seen to be only in the interests of the child. For self protection if nothing else, a male paddling a girl should have a female witness.

If that’s what her mom did at school with witness.
It could’ve easily been worse at home, at other times
when there are not witnesses.

This particular situation is a little more complicated. If you google and read the article it turns out that the Torbert family had just moved from another part of Texas to the Mesquite location. Tamara was having some difficulties adjusting to the new schedule and claimed to be on time and getting her new schedule. School officials didn't believe her. The mother herself was going to take the school to court over their CP policies. So, it's very questionable as to whether Tamara deserved any discipline at all. The school came up with the arrangement they did most likely to avoid bad publicity.
