Discipline in sport

The Soviet Union frequently used corporal punishment training their athletes. Nadia Comaneci, the gymnast, is a good example. In her biography she describes several times being spanked by her coach.

Are there other similar videos ?

That makes sense. I vaguely remember seeing similar videos with martial arts and swimming coaches

Actually, when I was a kid, I was a part of the sparring team for my Tae Kwon Do school and my sensei would actually get after us with a thin yellow plastic whiffle ball bat if we were slacking off during training. He wouldn't hit hard, but he would swat us on the butt with it and it definitely kept you from slacking off! This was in Alabama in the mid 2000s, so not that long ago.

Just lucky they were not in leotards that would have stung!

Disgraced figure skater, Tonya Harding, has said that her "coach," namely her mother, spanked her with a hairbrush about once a week when Tonya was little, including once in the Ladies room at a competition.

Unfortunately, Tonya didn't turn out as well as one might hope, despite all that discipline.

“I, Tonya” is a great movie.

After that "I, Tonya" movie came out, Tonya Harding admitted that she'd had an inkling of her husband's plan to injure Nancy Kerrigan beforehand, which undermined the whole premise of that movie, which portrayed her as having had no idea and as totally innocent.

She didn't grow up with good character, sadly, despite weekly spankings from her mother.

I, Tanya is a great film, whether or not it is accurate to the real-life Tonya Harding. In real life, her mother was a piece of work, and had a hand in creating the problematic figure skater.

I remember reading an interivew with another figure skater out of New Jersey where she admitted to getting spanked by her mom at the hotel during the olympics for being rude to a member of the coaching staff. It was a radio interview played for laughs, but a serious story, and the transcription ended up on a site like this. She was under 16 at the time. But it's been maybe a decade and my memory is fuzzy.

I'm not a fan of spanking as incentive for sports training, but I have no problem with it in a sports setting for other behavior (e.g. rudeness)
