I think these anti-spanking laws exist because too many parents simply don't respect the line between spanking and other forms of corporal punishment. I knew this one man who said he punished his daughter by hitting her on the "back" with a belt, and he referred to that as "spanking". I had initially assumed that maybe this was a euphemism like "backside" and that he was actually referring to the buttocks. But no, he was literally talking about her back. I could be mistaken, but that doesn't sound safe.
I've also heard hitting a child in the face referred to as "spanking", but perhaps the scariest thing is how it's so common for parents to talk about hitting their kids in the mouth as punishment for speaking disrespectfully.
The MOUTH!?!?!? That's probably one of the worst places on the body to hit.
Rather than ban spanking, I think there should be laws regulating the practice for safety, so that the idiots out there don't get the idea that literally punching your kid in the mouth is in any way an acceptable method of discipline.
