I think these kinds of laws are disastrous, but I also think it's good to follow some social norms. If you live in a place where physically punishing small children is considered too harsh, I would advise going along with that (for example).
Of course, that is a social norm I have more of a bias towards accepting, as well.

The worst effect of all of this, people lose the cultural normalcy of spanking and they end up accidentally tossing out the cultural habits that actually make it a safe (if in some eyes despicable) practice.

The result is outbursts of anger and uncontrolled rage, sudden random hitting followed by groveling parental apologies that just cement in the child's mind: (a) wow adults don't know what the hell they're doing and (b) they were very wrong to do that to me - I'm the victim.
