I've never subscribed to the spanking is the only punishment thing. Each kid is different and the punishment should not only match the crime but also the child. Some kids do respond well to spanking, and some kids don't. For us it has to be a fairly big deal or a repeated offense for a spanking to occur generally. Now I am human and sometimes when they're back talking I get fed up and will dish out a spanking, but that isn't a common thing.
