Yes, it is, at least in school. I think most real scientists can do without one.

(Also, I'm getting a bit worried now: After looking the object in question up on the English Wikipedia, I learned that it was invented in Germany and may not be in much use outside of Europe. So we'll see if anyone can guess it... Huh )
