Betrayal

I agree. We only have to open a history book or watch the evening news to see how unconscious the world has been and still is. However I believe there is a new consciousness emerging. And I think our very survival as a human race and our planet depends on it. Whether you see the glass half full or half empty, it is only a thought and fleeting. It really doesn't matter because thoughts are part of the world of form and all form comes and goes. What really matters is not what we think but who we really are. And who we are are, the "I am" as the Bible puts it, our very beingness, is timeless and eternal. It is the essence of God. It is the unexplainable. So my friend there is absolutely nothing to worry about if you can live in the present moment which is consciousness itself. Heavenly peace and joy will be yours right now. You don't have to search for it. You are it. How simple and miraculous is that! God Bless.

It is, I think, necessary to distinguish carefully between political leadership and popular opinion. I doubt (for example) that many Germans supported the liberal leadership's welcome for immigrants ab libitum. In the same way I have been assured by several Swedish acquaintances that the ban on spanking in Sweden had and has little popular support. The tempation when in power to use that for purposes other than for which one was elected is very tempting (and corrupting).

Let's not argue about political labels! "Liberal" is one that certainly means different things to different people, and I agree the CDU is not generally regarded as liberal. But by British standards, many of Fr Merkel's recent actions would definitely qualify as liberal. (And many of our doctrinaire "socialist" policies here would certainly not!)

My main point was that politicians don't always reflect the popular opinion of their country.

For example neither Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump will reflect more than half of the American voters who ever wins the election. Yet one will become the President. This I guess is the nature of democracy. Unfortunately when you get very extreme and polarizing views on both sides, this becomes a receipt for divisiveness and grid lock. It ends up being a lose/lose situation for everyone.
