Today is the day of the Solemnity of Mary; in the past, this was the celebration of Christ's Circumcision. Today that title is no longer on the calendar, but this is nevertheless a part of the Christmas season as the second Sunday, and the start of the New Year.
Because she gave birth to Christ, she came to be called the Mother of God, as she gave birth to him, and Christians wanted to confirm that the Son of God was also consubstantial with God.
This day, much like Christ, is therefore many things at once in this holiday season.
