Repeated Thief Gets Caught
#1
Last night at work one of our "regulars" made their way out of the building with a full cart of merchandise. I just happened to be getting carts because some of the spots to put carts were full. I was able to get him to take the cart inside. After a bit of a struggle, the thief ended up getting away with one box of something instead of the full cart. I did go out and get their licence, but in hind sight, would not have done so in the future because that was taking a big risk.

After they had gone and left I did a training receipt for the merchandise and it came up to just over $3100. While it is good that I stopped them, I'm not entirely certain I followed policy so if anything more happens from this I will post it. I am kind of nervous about when I go in next.

You might get in trouble for stopping them?

I can only say Well done, Mark!

To have prevented blatant theft on that scale seems entirely praiseworthy to me, and I hope your employer will take the same view. If not, I wonder what they think you should have done.

Best wishes

Last night I had to fill out a witness statement of what happened. I've also been told by security that if that person comes in again to have the manager on duty call the police because they are able to arrest the suspect.

So another update. I did end up going beyond what the policy allowed for that night. I ended up getting written up. After the cart was brought back in the building, when he tried getting it out again, the policy was for me to just let him do it and not to try and stop him, just note the date and time. It was explained to me that the policy is that way because what if the thief had a weapon?

I didn't put up a fight when I was in the office because I knew they were right and kind of was expecting it sooner or later.
