Recognizing Mom
#1
I hope this is the right place to put this. I am new and wanted to recognize my Mom's accomplishment but didn't see a good place for it.

Anyway, we are all proud.

Mom has been working to complete her PhD. She was contacted last week and she gets to defend her dissertation on January 23rd. She will graduate in May but she is essentially finished after the defense.

We are proud of Dr. Mom!

I think this is exactly the right place for that. Hearty congrats to your mom. Big Grin That is quite an accomplishment and the recognition of lots of work. Frankly, I don't know how she did it. Reading your introduction it sounds like you have a big family and two very young children at home. When I was writing my dissertation there was lots of coffee and Raman noodles and very little sleep. I can't imagine juggling both a job and family at the same time! Very impressive. I'm glad that you are proud of her - you should be. Thanks for sharing.

BTW, I'm sure you will get lots of mileage out of calling her Dr. Mom.

This is exactly the type of thing I love to see here! Our families and friends give us so many reasons to be proud and joyful, and placing a trophy for your mom on the mantle is a great tribute to her hard work and sacrifice. Thanks, P.J., and congratulations Mom!

When our son was doing his dissertation, which because his Ph.D. is in physics, was some kind of "proof" he had come up with throughout undergrad and grad school, we did not hear from him for most of the last six months that he was working on it. Thank goodness our now daughter in law was better at keeping up the communication or we would have worried about his health! He is now teaching at the school where he earned his doctorate so I guess it was all worthwhile. Smile

Mom's defense was yesterday.

I guess she is officially "Dr. Mom."

It was interesting. Dad, Mark and I went with her and were allowed to sit in the "audience." Benji and Caleb had to go to school and Julie's Mom kept the little kids.

She was introduced and she spoke for about an hour. Then the committee asked her questions. There was one older woman on the committee (the non-department representative?) who I thought was mean. She was giving Mom a hard time but Mom handled her well. At one point Mom did ask her if she had even read the abstract. Had I been the me I was a few years ago I would have stood up and told the woman to back off. The "audience" then asked questions. Well the audience was me, Dad, Mark and three other people. The only question asked from the audience was from some other prof who wanted to know how she felt she could personally impact the scientific community. (????) Mom is not looking to be part of the scientific community but oh well. They then chased everyone out and about two hours later called just Mom in.

Mom was passed with what she called "minor revisions." She says her committee felt one of the pieces of data was redundant and asked for her to remove it and there was an organization/structure error.

So, it looks like with a few revisions she is done.

Apparently it went rather well.

It was an interesting process but I was bored to tears but I was proud of Mom.

LOL I would be bored to tears too. A spanking would be faster and maybe less painful Tongue

But congrats again to your mom. Sounds like she kept her cool and held her own! I would have wanted to talk back to that woman too Dodgy

I cannot imagine having attended my son's dissertation defense. I would have understood so little of it!
