I certainly haven't studied her writing, but I think Kittykat sums it up well that raising children is different than training dogs. It's not that she believes in spanking; it's that she specifically advocates for using a "small strap" on 18-month-olds and expecting very young children to obey in ways that just aren't realistic for their age. There's a particular school of parenting that seems to think it's possible to use force to get children that young to sit perfectly still or do other things that aren't age-appropriate, and it's wrong. There is only so much a child that age can understand or is capable of, and spanking to try to demand more than that is wrong.
And I do take objection to her rejection of the idea that children should have a "free spirit." Of course kids, and their bad behavior, shouldn't be ignored, and parents need to be involved in their lives and not afraid to say no, but they kids need independence that's appropriate to their age and maturity too.
