I don't think government belongs inside of the family.

RE: Spanking to be Illegal in Scotland
I live in more than one country. I have a place where it is fully illegal to spank (Andorra), however, this was a law anti-democratically passed by a (very transient) government which was designed literally as social engineering - at the very least, 'we're in power, let's do this'.

The result? The culture doesn't just *change* with the law. If you want cultural change, you have to earn it, campaign for it, as they are basically doing in England and Wales. Where it's legal to spank but you'd be hard pressed to find many people who know it's still legal.

Paradoxically, in England and Wales it's legal to give even a bare bottom spanking as long as you don't bruise the bottom, but you'd NEVER admit it to anyone (which goes double for religious figures etc).

Whereas in the other country I occupy, you could if you wanted have full informal conversations about spanking discipline with parents and I'd say the majority of parents still spank and even religious figures, Sunday school teachers spank, but it's completely illegal. Even here, it's not exactly a very 'normal' topic of conversation.

The worst effect of all of this, people lose the cultural normalcy of spanking and they end up accidentally tossing out the cultural habits that actually make it a safe (if in some eyes despicable) practice.

The result is outbursts of anger and uncontrolled rage, sudden random hitting followed by groveling parental apologies that just cement in the child's mind: (a) wow adults don't know what the hell they're doing and (b) they were very wrong to do that to me - I'm the victim.

ok Sorry, I'm now officially ranting.

I don't think the government is going to know what is best for me not like my parents do even if they don't know all the time.

I think these kinds of laws are disastrous, but I also think it's good to follow some social norms. If you live in a place where physically punishing small children is considered too harsh, I would advise going along with that (for example).
Of course, that is a social norm I have more of a bias towards accepting, as well.

Interesting points here.

I wonder if the parents here would stop spanking if it became illegal wherever you live?

In my home? Probably not.

Governments shouldn't dictate how parents raise their kids. They should only get involved when there is real abuse happening.

Is spanking the only way to raise great kids? Definitely not, some of my friends aren't spanked and are probably much better kids.

Would i prefer not to get spanked?
Yes

Does it work on me?
Oh yes it does

I don't see a reason to outlaw spanking. In my home it's a consequence to my bad behaviour and i accept that. Mom spanks because she loves me and thinks that's best for me and because it's biblical.
Beating a kid in line is wrong.

I totally agree. And that's a very mature attitude to have.

It depends on the rule. Even in Sweden it isn't a crime, but it could lead to a court placing the children with a new family. It isn't considered a crime, just something that makes someone a bad parent.
That can still be pretty awful however.
