Spanking to be Illegal in Scotland
#1
The video contains a bit of mild bad language. I hope it is still ok to link to it.

Parental smacking of children will be illegal in Scotland next month. YouTuber Alex Belfield comments on it.

Now, I think most on here would agree with Mr Belfield that this is another example of unacceptable state interference into family life, but I am interested to know what people make of his reasons for smacking. Is it (or can it be) a means of, "snapping the child back in the room" when you have reached the end of your tether and lost control? I am not sure if this is the best defence of smacking.

I think any child raising laws that don't address child abuse are wrong and ridiculous.

But after saying that.......

Do you really think the only way to raise great, obedient kids is to use corporal punishment?

WHY do you spank?

I am not a parent, but I would say no. I support spanking, but it would be possible to raise good, obedient kids without it.

I agree. Shy I think this guy made it sound like you have to give a smack on the leg or bottom in order to regain control. That would be my only issue with what he is saying.

I also don't think it is something you do, "when you have lost your tether." My brother and I were nearly always smacked by my parents purely out of anger. We would wind them up so much until they totally lost.

"RIGHT, THAT'S IT!" Smack, smack, smack.

I don't think we were abused or anything (and I completely love my parents), but that doesn't seem like a good way to discipline to me.

I agree. A spanking is a consequence. It should be an event and not a knee jerk "That's it!" response.

The government has no right involving itself in the affairs of a family. I spank because I believe it is Biblical to do so.

All that happens when spanking becomes illegal is people get sneakier about it.

I wonder if the parents here would stop spanking if it became illegal wherever you live?

Spanking a child or a teenager should not be illegal. If they wanted to outlaw slapping a child or teenager in the face, whipping them with a belt or beating them, then I could go along with that. But a mild or moderate spanking using the hand or brush or small paddle should be legal.

I know at least two parents on the board who spank in a country where it is currently against the law.
