Big Hiking Trip
#1
I love hiking (as do the girls) but am not the biggest camper in the world. But as I'm starting a new job in just under a month, I don't know when/if I'll ever be able to take a long of a vacation again, and I'd like to have the extended time away from technology etc with the girls while still teens, and hiking/camping is the only way I could really afford a trip of this length.......so I'm taking Liv, Amaia, and my 16 year old niece (Amanda) on a 3+ week hiking trip. Maddie might join us for a week of it, if things work out.

I'm taking a cell phone (not that we'll always have cell service) as well as several battery packs for safety. I'm letting the girls bring ONE iPad to share when we have wifi, otherwise the whole "get away from technology" would be crushed with them constantly searching for wifi and all getting on it 24/7 when we have it.

There also will be organized bible study every other night since we'll be missing church on sundays.

Aside from that, 10-15 miles hiking a day, and then camping. About once every 5-6 days in a spot with running water and bathrooms and showers and a few other campers, most every other night all off by ourselves.

It'll be good to be back in North Carolina again, I was raised there but have been living in Louisiana and Texas my entire adult life.

I'm a bit scared to be taking so much on, but how often do you get a chance for an extended experience away from technology with ones teens.

My sister is watching the 1 year old twins in exchange for the fact her kids come to my house 2-3 days a week after school. It's goign to be weird to be away from them, but, again, once in a lifetime chance for me and my other kids.

I'll try to keep y'all posted on the trip as it goes on!

This sounds like a fun trip. Not sure if I could make it that long since I don’t hike much. Bring without electronics that long would kill me too. The Bible study is a great idea too.

You might be surprised Cody. Ten to fifteen miles would be about three or four hours on flat ground, but more on hills. It wouldn't take long for you to get used to it.

Yes ma’am I’m sure I would. I’m in decent shape but hiking that long for many days would have to be hard.

I think it would start to get easier after a couple of days, but I'm no expert. Katie?

Hope the trip goes well. I seem to recall, on your last hike, you took a paddle with you, and had to use it. Trust it won't be needed this time.

Totally the kind of thing that gets better after a few days. 10-15 miles a day is doable for an active person (even non hiker) they just have to adjust. The first 2-3 days is the worst. When you try to push your body further than that, it can do it for any given "day", but things can get more unpleasant in a hurry if you are trying to do it day after day.

Well, a week in and we are having a GREAT time. Hasn't been TOO hot (mostly). Things more remote than we'd like. Would appreciate a more regulaar shower and bed (lol). The trip was supposed to vary between 21 and 27 days depending on if we do the last leg, and we think we are def leaning toward doing the full thing. Maddie also definitely joining for 7 days. So far so good!

Have fun hiking in our state!! I’ve done some hiking out in the Appalachian Trail but I don’t think I could do anything like you’re talking about, that sounds like some really hard hiking! Have fun and stay safe.
